13 years and counting: Mr. Scott’s inspiring career as a General Surgeon with Dedicare
Meet our inspiring General Surgeon, Mr. Scott, who has been working with Dedicare for over 13 years! From Gibraltar to the Channel Islands, the Isle of Skye, and the Falkland Islands, his locum career has taken him to some incredible places. Here, he shares his experience of a partnership that has shaped a varied and rewarding journey.
Mr. Scott, why did you choose to work with Dedicare?
Dedicare knew about me before I knew about them, and since leaving my Substantive NHS Consultant post, Nicola has looked after me extremely well for the past 13 years. I am very grateful to my colleague who recommended me to the agency and wish he had done it earlier.
How has your experience been during that time?
I have never been out of work as a locum with Dedicare. I’ve had the chance to work in 13 different places, both in the UK and worldwide.
Nicola has been your main contact throughout your locum career. Can you share how her assistance has made a difference in your work and experience?
Nicola knows me, knows what I want, and has always been there for me. She is in regular contact by phone and email and lets me know about potential locum posts I can choose from. She helps me with accommodation, transport, and payment details, and takes care of all the problems associated with sorting out the jobs for me. Such a relief! All I need to do is show up and do the clinical surgery. No hassle, makes it all worthwhile.

You’ve worked in some incredible locations. Tell us more about where you’ve been!
I have worked in Gibraltar three times, Guernsey in the Channel Islands for seven years, Orkney, the Isle of Lewis for many years and many times in Fort William and the Isle of Skye. Yes, I got paid to go to Skye regularly! I have also worked in Aberystwyth in Wales, Hastings, and all three of the South Lanarkshire University Hospitals. Quite a fascinating time for a General Surgeon with an interest in variety.
You also worked in the Falkland Islands, how did that opportunity come about?
Having previously served as a Regular army officer with 2 PARA, I have always wanted to go to the Falklands. I was delighted when Nicola phoned and offered me the chance to work at King Edward Memorial Hospital at short notice. She fixed the flights, perfect local accommodation within walking distance, and organised absolutely everything.

As a locum, how has Dedicare supported your professional development?
As a locum, I have been able to complete my Appraisal and Revalidation through Dedicare. They have three of their own Responsible Officers and a Compliance Officer to look after my continuing professional needs.
Why have you chosen to stay with Dedicare?
I’ve never looked at another agency because I’ve never needed to. Nicola and Dedicare have served me so well for over 13 years.
