Radiographer Camille tells, “What specifically piqued my interest was the remoteness”
Meet Camille Croisier, a passionate radiographer who ventured to the captivating Falkland Islands. With no prior knowledge of the islands, Camille quickly discovered a breathtaking landscape filled with wildlife and a vibrant healthcare community. Here, she shares her insights on working in this enchanting setting and the spirit of collaboration that defines this extraordinary place.
What inspired you to work in the Falklands?
I had recently moved to the UK and the first job posting I came across was for the Falkland Islands. I admit that I had no idea where this was, but having just moved from Australia I was thrilled to discover the unknown! And what a pleasant surprise it was.
A quick google search confirmed that it was a series of isolated islands close to South America and only a hop, skip and a jump across to Antartica (well perhaps a very large jump – 1100km, but still very close considering). What specifically piqued my interest was the remoteness of the location (think rugged mountains and beautiful beachy coves) and that it is home to a magnitude of wildlife throughout the year (yes, penguins and lots of them !).
Can you describe your experience working at the hospital in the Falklands?
I loved it! (and no, Dedicare is not paying me to say that!) This was my first time working as a solo radiographer in a very remote location, so my initial concern was the amount of support I would have access to. But I had absolutely nothing to worry about. You will work very closely with other health professionals and you will find that it is a very welcoming, close knit team. I have met so many outstanding people, some local, others locuming just like me, but irrespective of where we have come from, we all help other out. And that, you will quickly learn, is the spirit of the Falklands.
Would you recommend Dedicare to others looking for similar opportunities?
Absolutely. I was very well looked after by Dedicare, whom arranged my transportation to/ from the Falklands, in addition to my accomodation, which was well within walking distance to all amenities, the town’s centre and the hospital. The staff are attentive and quick to answer any questions you may have and genuinely care about your experience.
Would you return to work in the Falklands?
Without a doubt, yes!
