Veterinarian Claire: “Living and working in the Falklands was such a wonderful experience”

Meet Claire, our inspiring Vet, who had an unforgettable journey working in one of the world’s most remote locations: the Falkland Islands. For two months, Claire embraced this spectacular adventure, fully experiencing the unique rewards of island life. If you’re dreaming of a career opportunity like no other, Claire’s story is sure to inspire you!

What has your experience been like working with Dedicare?

My two month trip to the Falklands to work as a locum vet for the Falklands Islands Government Veterinary Services (FIGVS) could not have gone better. Dedicare were fantastic when it came to organising my travel, accommodation and sorting out all the little details. Nicola and Clare were on the end of the phone if I needed them and made sure everything went smoothly during the journey down and were great at checking in whilst I was in the Falklands. It was by far the easiest start to a new job I have ever had.

Tell us more about your incredible adventure! Did you enjoy your time there?

Living and working in the Falklands was such a wonderful experience. Stanley is an incredibly friendly town and has everything you could ever need on your doorstep. The locals were so welcoming and easy to get on with. There is plenty to do, with lots of sports and clubs available in town, and lots of beautiful beaches and hills to walk on around and about. The wildlife is amazing. It was winter during my trip but I still managed to see Magellanic penguins, king penguins, seals, dolphins, Caracaras and plenty of other birds.

How was your experience of working at the clinic in the Falklands?

The workload was varied with a decent amount of paperwork and an interesting case-load. There are often quite a few advice calls from people out in camp or on other islands who aren’t able to bring animals in to town, and most of these people are happy to do what you say and are aware that it isn’t always easy to make a diagnosis down the telephone. The OOH is certainly quieter than I am used to, and I went several nights and weekends without a single call.

The clinic was well-equipped with digital radiography, abdominal and transrectal ultrasound scanners and a good supply of medications. Since referral isn’t an option it is important to have a “can do” attitude with cases, and clients are usually pretty open to you “giving things a go”, as there often isn’t any other option. The team at FIGVS (Zoe, Teenie, Sarah and Kimberley) were amazing. They are so easy to work with and so friendly. Nothing is ever too much trouble and they couldn’t have made me feel more welcome. The rest of the Department of Agriculture is also fantastic and everyone is extremely approachable.

Did you have the chance to explore the islands?

I was lucky enough to get to explore some of camp and also West Falkland whilst I was there and it was great to see some more of the flora and fauna of this beautiful country.

Anything more you would like to add?

Thank you so much to Dedicare for making it such an easy process and an enjoyable visit.
